As announced last October by Luxembourg's Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Luxembourg will see 20 fixed speed cameras installed in 2016, with the first 10 set for operation during February including along the N11 between Gonderange and Waldhof where the first camera has already been installed, and another 10 to be deployed in April, including the Schlammesté junction on the N3.
The speed cameras are being installed at the most dangerous stretches of roads across the Grand Duchy which have witnessed serious accidents, as almost half of all fatal accidents are caused by vehicles being driven at excessive speed.
The €9 million cost of the project will cover both the purchase and installation of the equipments as well as the administrative centre which will employ eight staff initially. Those caught speeding will have 45 days in which to respond to demands for fines. It is expected that the scheme will raise around €7m in fines annually (at current rates).
