Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the National Roads Administration have reported that construction of a new footbridge over the A3 motorway in Bettembourg is expected to be completed by May 2026.
On Saturday 25 October 2025, Luxembourg's Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, visited the construction site of the new pedestrian bridge, accompanied by Laurent Zeimet, Mayor of Bettembourg, and representatives of the National Roads Administration.
Located between the Livange and Bettembourg interchanges, near Bettembourg Castle, the new bridge replaces the old steel footbridge, which was dismantled on Saturday morning to make way for the new structure in the afternoon. The new bridge weighs approximately 90 tonnes and required the use of two 750-tonne mobile cranes for installation.
The footbridge spans 60 metres between abutments and has a deck width of 3 metres. According to the authorities, it provides a safe crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The project, with a total budget of approximately €1,750,000 (including VAT), is expected to be completed by May 2026. Works will include the development of access paths and their connection to the new bridge.
As part of the installation of the footbridge, the National Roads Administration took advantage of the temporary closure of the A3 motorway to carry out additional works, thus avoiding further disruptions. These included:
- renewing the road surface at the A3/A6 junction;
- maintenance work on the OA1035 and OA1038 bridges near the Gasperich interchange;
- load tests on the OA1025 bridge (Livange viaduct);
- preparatory works on the Livange viaduct;
- finishing works on the shoulders under the Y bridge (OA1171);
- various works on the gantries.
