On Wednesday 11 February 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) announced two phases of road works which will take place on Beaumont Street and part of Capucins Street in Luxembourg for a period of two months, beginning Monday 16 February 2026.
The VdL said the work is part of its efforts to enhance the city centre by strengthening the pedestrian character of the two streets, which have been classified as pedestrian zones since 2021. In this context, the VdL announced the road will be raised to pavement level to create a continuous surface, providing greater comfort for pedestrians, enhancing the friendliness of the streets and supporting the businesses concerned. In addition, the rainwater drainage system will be adapted, including relocating gullies to the central axis of the carriageway.
The first phase will begin on Monday 16 February and will concern Rue des Capucins (section between Place des Bains and Rue Beaumont) as well as Rue Beaumont up to building number 11. The second phase will begin around mid-March and will concern the remaining section of Rue Beaumont (between building number 11 and Avenue de la Porte-Neuve). Once the adaptation works have been completed, a final layer of asphalt will be applied across the entire surface to ensure a uniform finish.
The VdL emphasised that throughout the works, pavements, buildings and shops will remain accessible to pedestrians and only a few localised areas may be temporarily affected. Deliveries to shops and establishments will continue to be guaranteed.
These works form part of the continuation of projects carried out by the VdL to improve the quality of public spaces in the city centre, such as the introduction of a pedestrian zone on Rue Beaumont, the transformation of Rue du Fossé into a shared space and subsequently into a pedestrian zone, and the creation of a pedestrian zone open to cyclists on Rue Aldringen.
