On Wednesday 8 June 2022, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, presented the main results of the 2021 edition of annual road accident report.

While the total number of accidents on Luxembourg roads has increased marginally, the number of fatalities have decreased: 24 fatalities were recorded in a total of 21 accidents. On the other hand, the number of seriously injured victims was on the rise. However, the number of fatal accidents decreased by 49% from 2013 to 2021.

Vehicle speed, despite on a downward trend, is still the dominant cause of road accidents. Drunk driving remains the second main cause for accidents, the number of fatal and serious accidents, which has increased since 2020.

In addition, dangerous behaviour while driving, such as aggression towards pedestrians, has had a negative impact on road safety in Luxembourg. However, according to the statistics, maneuvering faults has shown a small decrease.

Statistics showed that collisions between vehicles were predominant, while collisions between vehicles and trees and other fixed obstacles, as well as collisions between vehicles and pedestrians caused a lot of serious accidents.

It also noted in the report that the age of the drivers presumed responsible for the fatal and serious accidents fluctuated between eighteen and 44 years old, unlike the previous year when they were mainly aged between 35 and 44 years old.

Minister Bausch said: “I am really happy that an important factor, namely speed, which remains the main cause of serious road accidents, has gone down. We see that a different cultural perception of speed has taken hold in Luxembourg, which is extremely positive and which, of course, also helps us to reduce staff. This has to do with speed cameras which contribute to the decrease in the number of fatal and serious accidents. However, it is terrifying that the number of accidents resulting from drink-driving and drug use has increased".
