Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security has called on the public to adopt appropriate healthcare practices during the winter period to reduce pressure on hospital emergency departments.
Patients whose state of health does not require urgent intervention are encouraged to consult their general practitioner (GP) or paediatrician, or to visit an out-of-hours medical centre (Maison Médicale). The ministry said this approach would help to ensure appropriate care while reducing pressure on hospital emergency departments.
The out-of-hours medical centres are located at the following addresses:
-
Luxembourg City: 23 Val Fleuri, L-1526 Luxembourg
-
Esch-sur-Alzette: 3-5 Avenue du Swing, L-4367 Belvaux (Esch-Belval)
-
Ettelbruck: 110 Avenue Lucien Salentiny, L-9080 Ettelbruck
The paediatric medical centre (CHL - KannerKlinik) operates at 4 Rue Ernest Barblé, L-1210 Luxembourg.
The out-of-hours medical centres are open on weekdays from 20:00 to midnight. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, they are open from 08:00 to midnight.
The paediatric medical centre is open on weekdays from 19:00 to 22:00 and on weekends and public holidays from 09:00 to 21:00.
According to the ministry, by first turning to GPs, paediatricians and out-of-hours medical centres for routine care, everyone contributes to better use of healthcare resources and allows emergency services to focus on situations requiring immediate treatment.
The ministry also shared health recommendations to limit the spread of winter infections, noting that vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect against respiratory infections. It also encouraged residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and to consult their treating physician for advice.
Other recommendations to limit the spread of viruses include:
-
regular hand washing with soap and water;
-
daily room ventilation, even in cold weather;
-
avoiding close contact with vulnerable people if symptoms occur;
-
wearing a mask in case of a cough or fever or when visiting healthcare facilities;
-
covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
