The Health Directorate within Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security has published its latest weekly retrospective report on the evolution of the main acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

For the fourth consecutive week (week 50), the number of influenza (flu) cases reported by laboratories has been steadily increasing. From Monday 9 to Sunday 15 December 2024, the number of cases increased from 190 to 350, up 84% compared to the previous week. This evolution is part of a steady growth trend observed since week 47, when there were 60 cases, followed by 114 cases in week 48 and 190 cases in week 49.

The authorities noted that these figures confirm the start of the annual wave of seasonal flu. The Ministry of Health and Social Security recalled, however, that it is still possible to get vaccinated to protect oneself effectively and limit the spread of the virus. Vaccination remains the most reliable way to prevent seasonal flu and reduce the risk of associated complications.

In addition to vaccination, the following barrier gestures are advised to limit the spread of the virus:

- wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 30 seconds, carefully rubbing the palms, fingers, backs of your hands and under your nails;

- cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If you do not have a tissue, use the crook of your elbow;

- immediately throw used tissues in the rubbish bin and then wash your hands;

- avoid physical contact such as hugs, kisses and handshakes;

- avoid crowds and gatherings during the epidemic season;

- stay home if you are sick to avoid contaminating those around you;

- ventilate rooms regularly, at least three to four times a day for ten minutes.

Week 50 also saw an increase in the number of cases of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), from 76 to 98 cases, i.e. an increase of 29% compared to the previous week.

The viral concentration detected in wastewater showed a slight increase.

The latest available sequencing data revealed that the KP.3 variant remained predominant in October 2024.

Moreover, the number of RSV cases increased by 24%, with 226 confirmed cases, compared to 182 the previous week.

The report did not share whooping cough figures for the week in question, although the number of cases have been very low in recent weeks.
