On Tuesday 22 July 2025, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security and the Hôpital Intercommunal de Steinfort (HIS) announced that tests carried out on the municipal drinking water network, including the reservoirs in Steinfort and Kleinbettingen, showed no presence of legionella bacteria.

The results of environmental analyses of potential sources within the commune are still pending and are needed to determine the origin of the contamination that caused pneumonia in eight individuals diagnosed between Friday 4 and Wednesday 9 July 2025, the statement noted.

As a result, the restrictions previously applied to shower use for individuals over the age of 65 or those with weakened immune systems have now been lifted. The dedicated phone line for legionellosis has also been deactivated. For health-related questions, members of the public are advised to contact the usual health inspection number (247-85650) or dial 112 outside of office hours and request the health inspection service.

The Health Directorate confirmed that investigations are ongoing in collaboration with the National Health Laboratory (LNS), the Water Management Administration (AGE), the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, the Labour and Mines Inspectorate (ITM) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). These efforts aim to assess legionella-related risks, particularly those potentially linked to climate change.

The Ministry of Health and Social Security and the HIS confirmed that further updates will be issued as soon as new information becomes available.
