The Grand Ducal Police have warned of an increase in so-called “fake roofers” operating in and around Luxembourg City as well as in the south of the country, since early June 2025.

According to the police, the perpetrators gain access to properties and houses under false pretences, usually by claiming to have “accidentally” noticed that the roof shows signs of damage.

According to victims’ reports, the bogus roofers generally appear in pairs. While one person engages the occupants in conversation and claims it is necessary to inspect “urgent” roof work or repairs for the purpose of providing a quotation, the second person exploits the distraction to steal valuables such as jewellery or cash from inside the house.

The police emphasised that elderly people and those living alone are particularly affected.

The offenders often appear convincing and professional: they wear work clothing, carry tools and present themselves as trustworthy.

The bogus roofers usually travel in a white van with blue roof ladders attached to the outside. According to victims, the perpetrators mainly speak French, though in some cases they also speak Luxembourgish.

The police strongly advise caution and provide the following guidance:

• do not allow unknown persons into one’s home – even if they claim urgent repairs or inspections are required;

• always request an official company identification or a written order confirmation;

• if in doubt, call the company back yourself or contact the police;

• inform elderly neighbours or relatives about this method of deception;

• report suspicious persons or vehicles immediately via the emergency number 113.
