The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture has provided an update on the spread of bluetongue (BTV serotype 3) in Luxembourg, highlighting recent case numbers, vaccination efforts and the current impact on livestock.

The reference laboratory in Luxembourg confirmed the detection of bluetongue virus (BTV serotype 3) on 2 August 2024.

Concerning the spread of bluetongue (BTV serotype 3) in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) has announced that 176 animals (109 cattle, 63 sheep, four goats) have tested positive for bluetongue since 1 August 2024. 101 farms are currently affected by the disease.

Since the vaccination campaign began on 9 August 2024, approximately 50,000 vaccine doses have been distributed to veterinarians. An additional 190,000 doses have been reordered to ensure sufficient supply over the coming weeks.

In general, no increased mortality rate has been recorded since the outbreak of the disease, ALVA confirmed.
