According to Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security, acute respiratory infections were on the rise again during week 49, from Monday 4 to Sunday 10 December 2023.

The ministry publishes a weekly retrospective report which provides a summary of the evolution of acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2

The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 rose from 460 to 658 over one week, representing an increase of 43%. The positivity rate increased from 26% to 28%, whilst the viral concentration detected in wastewater decreased slightly. The latest available sequencing data showed a preponderance of the BA.2.86 variant (44%), followed by the XBB.1.9 variant (30%).

Flu

The number of cases of influenza (flu) reported by laboratories increased sharply from 51 to 134 over one week, i.e. an increase of 163%. These data largely overlap with LNS sentinel surveillance which indicated increased circulation of SARS-CoV-2, rhinoviruses and RSV, as well as an increase in the circulation of the influenza virus.

RSV

The number of people positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as reported by laboratories, rose from 116 to 134 over one week, i.e. an increase of 16%.

The ministry recalled that vaccination is an effective way to protect against respiratory infections and the serious complications that can result from them. People aged 65 and over, as well as at-risk individuals, are "strongly encouraged" to get vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19. It is recommended that they consult their doctor to discuss vaccination.
