On Friday 7 October 2022, following the recommendations of Luxembourg's Higher Council for Infectious Diseases (CSMI), the Ministry of Health and Ministry of State announced a second booster dose (or fourth dose) of the COVID-19 vaccine.
New recommendation for a 2nd booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine
The second booster dose of a bivalent messenger RNA vaccine (Comirnaty Wuhan/B.A.1 or Spikevax Wuhan/B.A.1 or Comirnaty Wuhan/B.A. 4-5, subject to availability) is recommended for the following people:
- all people aged 60 and over,
- people aged between 12 and 59 with comorbidities exposing them to severe forms of COVID-19,
- immunocompromised people,
- pregnant women,
- and health professionals.
The second booster dose may also be offered by individual decision to all other people aged 12 to 59 without risk factors and who have not had a recent infection. On the other hand, this fourth dose is not recommended in healthy people who have had an infection with SARS-CoV-2 (confirmed by PCR or antigen test) after the first booster dose.
The second booster dose is given at an interval of at least four months after the third vaccination dose (or first booster dose) or after an infection. This booster dose aims to maintain a high level of vaccine protection against infection, severe forms of the disease and death.
Temporary reopening of the Esch-Belval vaccination centre
In order to better prepare the population for possible waves of infection for next autumn and winter, the Luxembourg government has decided to reopen the Esch-Belval vaccination centre from Thursday 13 October 2022. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00 and Saturday from 07:00 to 13:00.
How to make an appointment?
There will be no more postal mail that will be sent to the persons concerned. They can directly consult the www.covidvaccination.lu to get an appointment at a vaccination centre by entering their registration number. The appointment process will begin from 11 October 2022.
People aged 60 and over who have received an invitation from the Luxembourg government in the past by post can either make an appointment using their registration number as described above (starting 11 October 2022) or use the code which was sent to them and which retains its validity.
Since vaccination centres are temporary places dedicated to vaccination against COVID-19, it is still recommended to go to a doctor or a pharmacy to get vaccinated. The list of doctors and pharmacies participating in the vaccination campaign, as well as the dates of the Impfbus are available on the www.impfen.lu.
Personalised assistance is also offered through the Health Helpline set up for this purpose under the number 247-65533.
