Luxembourg's Ministry of Health has called on the population to get vaccinated against the seasonal flu.
As the seasonal flu returns to Luxembourg, members of the public, particularly those at risk, are advised to get vaccinated against this infectious disease.
The flu occurs each year from October to March and is contagious. This winter, according to the Ministry of Health, the disease may have even more serious consequences, because fewer people will have acquired natural immunity against influenza during the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore more people are likely to contract it.
"We strongly recommend to be vaccinated against the flu this winter, especially people said to be at risk", warned Luxembourg's Minister of Health, Paulette Lenert. At-risk people are those aged 65 and over, pregnant women, those suffering from a chronic illness or with a weakened immune system, as well as HIV-positive patients. People in regular contact with those at risk of serious illness are also encouraged to get vaccinated, as are the close entourage and professionals in contact with these people.
The best time to get a flu shot is in the autumn or early winter, before the flu starts to spread.
Vaccination is carried out by one's general practitioner (GP).
The flu vaccine is offered free of charge to anyone at risk or over the age of 65. The complete list of people who can get vaccinated for free as well as details on the vaccination procedures are available online at sante.lu/grippe.
The Ministry of Health recalled that, in the context of the pandemic and the vaccination campaign against COVID-19, the flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be administered on the same day.
