On Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June 2026, the President of the Portuguese Republic, António José Seguro, and his wife, Margarida Maldonado Freitas, paid an official visit to Luxembourg, at the invitation of Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie.
Accompanied by Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Emídio Sousa, as well as six Portuguese Members of Parliament, the Portuguese Head of State and his wife were officially welcomed by the Grand Ducal couple on the forecourt of the Grand Ducal Palace on Saturday 6 June.
Following military honours, the playing of the national anthems, the inspection of the troops and the presentation of the respective authorities and delegations, António José Seguro and Margarida Maldonado Freitas were received at the Grand Ducal Palace for a meeting with the Grand Ducal couple, during which gifts will also be exchanged.
The visit continued with a luncheon hosted by the Grand Ducal couple in honour of the President of the Portuguese Republic, his wife and the official delegation, in the presence of Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.
The visit also included a meeting with members of the Chamber of Deputies Bureau as well as members of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Cooperation, Foreign Trade and the Greater Region and the Portuguese Head of State also with met Prime Minister Frieden at the Hôtel Saint-Maximin for discussions focusing principally on key current European issues, and a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Minister Bettel.
As part of the Saint Anthony festivities organised by the Portuguese community in Dudelange, the Portuguese presidential couple then travelled to Dudelange, where they met with Mayor Dan Biancalana, and President of the Documentation Centre on Human Migrations (CDMH), Tiago Flores. The couple also attended the opening of the exhibition “Atlas Lusitano” by artist Frederico Ferreira at the Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre, in the presence of the Minister for Culture, Eric Thill, the Director of the Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre, Adília Martins de Carvalho, the artist and the exhibition curator, André de Quiroga.
The first day of the visit concluded with an informal dinner hosted by Prime Minister Frieden in honour of the President of the Portuguese Republic and his wife.
On Sunday 7 June, the Portuguese presidential couple, accompanied by the Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic and his wife, were welcomed at the Artikuss Cultural Centre in Sanem, in the presence of the Mayor of Sanem, Simone Asselborn-Binz, and the Coordinator of Portuguese Education in the Benelux countries, Mónica Bastos.
This part of the visit included a reading of texts written by pupils as part of the project “For Me, Portugal Is…”, through which they expressed their vision of Portugal and the links they maintain with the country. The programme continued with the screening of a short film created with young children as an extension of this initiative. A publication bringing together all of the contributions was presented to the President of the Portuguese Republic.
The Philharmonie Luxembourg then hosted a meeting with Luxembourg's Portuguese community, in the presence of Grand Duke Guillaume. On this occasion, speeches were given by the President of the Portuguese Republic, the Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic and the President of the Organising Committee for the Commemorations of Portugal Day, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, Miguel Monjardino.
The visit concluded with a concert by Portuguese singer-songwriter António Zambujo.
