On Thursday 10 September 2026, Luxembourg's Consumer Protection Directorate reported that it had inspected 240 stands as part of its annual inspection campaign at street markets in Echternach, Mersch, Dudelange and Luxembourg-Ville.
The campaign concluded at the Luxembourg City Braderie, which was held on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September 2026 and focused on compliance with regulations concerning the display of prices and reductions.
According to the directorate, the campaign prioritised informing and raising awareness among traders while ensuring that consumers received clear and transparent information.
Ahead of the street markets, the directorate organised a webinar on promotions and price reductions for professionals across all sectors, regardless of whether they were participating in the events. The webinar aimed to remind businesses of their main legal obligations and help them comply with the applicable rules.
Inspections at the street markets were carried out in two stages. During an initial morning inspection, officers checked price displays and informed traders of any irregularities identified, giving them an opportunity to rectify the issues.
Inspectors returned in the early afternoon to verify whether the requested changes had been made. According to the directorate, the majority of traders brought their practices into compliance following the initial inspection, with enforcement measures limited to cases where irregularities had not been corrected.
Following the second round of inspections, officers from the directorate drew up two official reports. Additionally, the Grand Ducal Police officers, who participated in the second inspection round at the Luxembourg City Braderie, also issued two fines.
Luxembourg's Minister for Consumer Protection Martine Hansen commented: "These results underline the effectiveness of the approach favoured by the Consumer Protection Directorate, which is based on prevention, dialogue and support for professionals. This method promotes a better understanding of legal obligations while ensuring effective consumer protection. This campaign therefore perfectly illustrates the Directorate's ongoing commitment, both to transparent information for consumers and to a framework of fair competition for professionals."
