On Thursday 2 July 2026, Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, announced that train services on five rail lines will be suspended or adapted during the summer school holidays to allow maintenance and modernisation works to be carried out across the rail network.
According to the CFL, the affected lines are:
- Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz
- Luxembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange
- Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy
- Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier
- Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon
The CFL noted that the works have been scheduled during the school holidays, when passenger numbers are lower and more buses are available to operate replacement services. Around 200 drivers will operate almost 1,000 replacement bus journeys each day during the works. Passengers may also use RGTR and TICE services.
Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz
There will be no trains between Luxembourg and Thionville from Thursday 16 July to Sunday 23 August 2026 (inclusive). Replacement buses will operate at regular intervals, with additional services during peak hours.
Luxembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange
There will be no trains between Luxembourg and Bettembourg from Thursday 16 July to Friday 14 August (inclusive) and between Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 August (inclusive).
According to the CFL, the closures will allow work to continue on the new Luxembourg–Bettembourg railway line, due to enter service in September 2027, as well as the completion of the Howald interchange, including escalators and station facilities, which are expected to open in the last quarter of 2026.
Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy
There will be no trains between Ettelbruck and Gouvy, or between Kautenbach and Wiltz, from Monday 24 August to Monday 14 September 2026 (02:00). The works include the renewal of 3.7 km of track, maintenance of stations and rockfall protection along the Northern Line.
Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier
There will be no trains between Luxembourg and Igel from Monday 24 August to Monday 14 September 2026 (04:00). The works include the renovation of the Wasserbillig border railway bridge in cooperation with Germany's DB InfraGo, as well as the renewal of 11.4 km of track between Wecker and Fausermillen.
Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon
Train services between Luxembourg and Arlon will be affected throughout July and early August, with full closures on selected dates and reduced services on others while Infrabel carries out infrastructure works on the Belgian rail network. Replacement buses will operate where necessary.
The CFL advised passengers to consult cfl.lu or the CFL Go and Mobiliteit.lu applications before travelling for up-to-date journey information.
