Luxembourg's national statistics institute, STATEC, has reported a 0.3% increase in salaried employment in the fourth quarter of 2024 and a 1.0% increase over the past twelve months.

In its report published on Thursday 24 April 2025, STATEC noted that the growth in salaried employment remains moderate. The 0.3% increase in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the third quarter of 2024 is in line with the trend observed in previous quarters. Over one year, salaried employment rose by 1.0%, slightly higher than the 0.9% recorded in the previous quarter.

Professional and support activities (+0.8%) as well as administration and other public services (+1.1%) posted the strongest quarterly increases. Conversely, the sectors of industry, construction and information and communication saw a decline in the number of employees during the fourth quarter.

On an annual basis, professional and support activities (+1.8%) and public administration and other public services (+4.0%) emerged as the most dynamic sectors. The increase in professional and support activities was reportedly driven by growth in head office-related roles, while the expansion of central government services contributed most significantly to the growth in public administration.

The construction sector, however, experienced a marked decrease of 4.3% in the number of employees over one year. The most significant job losses were observed in the residential and non-residential building construction sub-sectors.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of resident employees increased at the same pace as that of cross-border workers, with both groups recording a 0.3% rise compared to the previous quarter. While the number of French cross-border workers was not specifically detailed, German and Belgian cross-border employment declined over the year, by 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.
