The Statistics and Market Intelligence department of the Luxemburg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has published its high-speed Internet statistics.
The statistics show the highlights of the Internet access market as of 30 June 2017, such as the significant increase in subscriptions allowing downstream speeds greater than or equal to 100 Mbps through increasing use of VDSL and fiber optics.
The Internet Statistical Sheet gives an overview of the evolution of the use of fixed infrastructures as well as the evolution of the commercialisation of broadband and very high-speed Internet access. It shows in particular that the rate of VDSL (Very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber) and FTTH (Fiber to the Home) coverage is high. The number of fiber optic connections in homes and premises also increased by 22,200 units to reach a total of 165,600 connections, an increase of 6 points in one year. As of the end of June, 57% of housing and premises were equipped with fiber optics.
Moreover, the market share of alternative operators continues to grow while that of Post Telecom (including branches) was down slightly compared to 2016. The ILR also highlighted that the number of accesses sold on the wholesale market by Post Technologies has shown an increase of 3,200 connections over one year and amounted to 48,200 (+ 7.1%) units on 30 June 2017.
