Mozambique, following Cyclone Idai;

The Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has confirmed that it is donating €250,000 in humanitarian aid towards disaster relief efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The Minister of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, Paulette Lenert, decided to grant the aid to help restore the situation caused by Cyclone Idai, one of the worst natural disasters in the world to hit Southern Africa.

The money has been allocated following an emergency appeal from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support the Mozambique Red Cross and the Red Cross Movement in helping 75,000 people in need, most specifically with regard to housing, health, sanitation and hygiene, inclusion and gender and strengthening of civil society.

Previously, following an official request from the World Food Programme, a team of two telecommunication experts from the intervention group responsible for humanitarian missions and two rapid deployment satellite communication systems had also been dispatched via the emergency.lu platform to the Beira region in Mozambique. This team is being reinforced by two Luxembourg volunteers who are part of the European emergency response capabilities ("volunteer pool").
