The online "Fortnite Stay Home Cup" tournament organised by Orange in partnership with 11F has broken records in Luxembourg: more than 500 players competed in an online video game tournament.
Announced on 22 April on 11F's social networks, the tournament already had more than 100 registrations in less than 24 hours; in the end, more than 500 players took part in the qualifying phases on 3 May - a record because never before has an e-sport competition brought together so many people in Luxembourg.
The recipe for this success can be explained on the one hand by the context of confinement - the online video game lending itself perfectly to the situation (the slogan of the tournament was "Stay safe & play home") - and, on the other hand, by the popularity of Fortnite, still the leader in “Battle Royale” games despite the arrival of serious competitors such as Apex Legends or Call of Duty: Warzone.
The goal was to win the €800 prize offered by Orange by earning a place on the podium. Separated into 2 categories according to their game platforms (Consoles or PC), the players embarked on the competition in teams of 2 hoping to win €250 for a 1st place, €100 for a 2nd place or €50 for a 3rd place. The final of the tournament which took place on Sunday 10 May 2020 saw the crowning of the teams Braza X Mata (consoles) and No Earnings (PC) who managed to take the upper hand over the 52 other teams still in the running at this stage of the competition.
After such an event, the scene is set for a sequel for the Luxembourg gamer community on a similar scale.
