On Wednesday 3 June 2026, Luxembourg's men's national football team lost 0-1 to Italy in the first of its June international friendlies, in front of a crowd of 9,214 spectators at the Stade de Luxembourg.

The Rout Léiwen (“Red Lions”), coached by Jeff Strasser, came into the match following a 5-0 aggregate victory over Malta in the UEFA Nations League play-offs, while Italy were looking to bounce back after their defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 European Qualifiers final.

The match began cautiously, with clear chances at a premium. Italy created the better opportunities before the break, with Francesco Pio Esposito seeing a backheel effort drift narrowly wide in the 24th minute and Niccolò Pisilli later finding the side netting from a tight angle. Just before half-time, Luis Koleosho tested Luxembourg goalkeeper Anthony Moris, who made a comfortable save. Luxembourg struggled to create meaningful openings against a well-organised Italian defence, and the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

Italy broke the deadlock four minutes after the restart when Francesco Pio Esposito headed home from a cross delivered by Niccolò Pisilli. The visitors nearly doubled their advantage shortly afterwards, with Pisilli striking the outside of the post.

Luxembourg enjoyed more possession after falling behind and increased the pressure in the closing stages, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was rarely called into action. The hosts' best opportunity came in stoppage time when Christopher Martins met a Sébastien Thill free-kick with a header that flew over the crossbar, as the match ultimately ended in a 1-0 victory for Italy.

Speaking after the match, Luxembourg head coach Jeff Strasser praised his team's commitment and overall performance against one of Europe's traditional football powers: "I am satisfied with the performance and commitment shown by the players. We demonstrated to the public what this team is capable of, even if there were moments when we could have pressed higher and been more aggressive.” He added: "We wanted to press higher, but Italy's quality made that difficult. We were pushed deeper than we would have liked, but even then we did not concede many opportunities. We worked hard and remained organised against a very strong opponent."

Luxembourg will conclude its international window on Saturday 6 June 2026, when the Red Lions travel to Tirana to face Albania at the Arena Kombëtare.
