On Tuesday 25 February 2025, Luxembourg’s women’s national football team claimed their biggest-ever victory in the UEFA Nations League with a dominant performance.
Daniel Santos’ team hosted tournament debutants Liechtenstein (FIFA ranked No.189) at the Emile Mayrisch Stadium in Esch-sur-Alzette. The visitors had suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat against Armenia in their opening match on 21 February 2025. Luxembourg, meanwhile, had earned a 2-2 draw against Kazakhstan on the same pitch five days earlier, securing their first point in Group C3.
Luxembourg began the match on the front foot, pressing their opponents early. Forward Rachel Kirps had an initial attempt that narrowly missed the target in the third minute of the game. Undeterred by the rainy conditions, the hosts continued to create chances through relentless pressing and broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, with Caroline Jorge opening the scoring. The nineteen-year-old forward doubled her tally 20 minutes later, calmly slotting home her second goal. Jorge continued to shine, providing an assist for Amy Thompson, who made it 3-0 just before half-time.
The second half started in a similar fashion, with Luxembourg extending their lead just three minutes after the restart. Rachel Kirps won a penalty, which Marta Estevez confidently converted - mirroring her successful spot-kick against Kazakhstan in the previous match. Goalkeeper Lucie Schlime then showcased her shot-stopping abilities, making two saves to preserve the clean sheet. Meanwhile, Jorge came close to securing a hat-trick but saw her penalty saved by Liechtenstein’s goalkeeper Bettina Huber. Luxembourg, however, remained relentless in attack, and Ana Barbosa Abreu made it 5-0 in the 68th minute, reacting quickest in a crowded box to find the net.
Captain Laura Miller added her name to the scoresheet with a well-struck effort following a corner, before Charlotte Schmitt rounded off the scoring with her first international goal. With a final score of 7-0, Daniel Santos’ side secured their biggest-ever competitive victory on the official international stage.
After two matches in the UEFA Nations League, Luxembourg’s women’s national team sit second in Group C3 with four points. Their next fixture sees them travel to group leaders Armenia on Friday 4 April 2025, before an away match against Liechtenstein on Tuesday 8 April 2025.
