Drama; 101 mins; a Luxembourgish production, produced by Samsa Film
The opening scene sees Emma (Carla Juri) is hospital where she is being treated for injuries which one suspects were caused by domestic abuse. The nurse thinks so and introduces her to Tania (Sascha Ley) who runs a women's shelter.
Greeted by Khadij (Véro Tshanda Beya Mputu), she also meets Sascha (Alessia Raschella) and Esperanza (Esperanza Martin González-Quevedo), who all have different, but relatable stories.
Emma is reluctant to talk about her situation, even to admit that she may be a victim of domestic abuse. She comes from a professional background and she confronts her husband, Marc (Luc Schiltz), who we quickly start to see in subjecting Emma to psychological abuse.
Khadij, Sascha and Esperanza all have children, of different ages, and all have different, and sometimes difficult relationships with them, often sharing custody while they are staying at the shelter, sometimes up to two years. Emma then discovers she is pregnant: could this help or hinder her in moving forward with her life, and would it be with or without Marc?
The women's unlikely friendship pushes them closer together into a fight to take back their power, their individualities, their freedom and their own personalities.
A strong telling of a story set in the world of domestic abuse, with many scenes filmed on the banks of the River Moselle near Remich.
The film is scheduled to go on general release in Luxembourg from 13 November 2024.
