Wartime Drama; 100 mins: 12+

Based on a true story, Southwick House in Hampshire, England (just north of Portsmouth) was the military base in the summer of 1944 in the lead up to D-Day.

America's Dwight Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser), together with Britain's Bernard 'Monty' Montgomery (Damian Lewis) and other army, air force and navy leaders from both sides of the Atlantic were planning a massive Allied amphibious invasion of Nazi-occupied France during World War II.

Everything and everyone was ready, but they needed to ensure that the weather would be suitable. Already in the camp was the American meteorologist Irving Krick (Chris Messina) who had gained most of his recent experience in Northern Africa and who relied on previous weather patterns repeating thenselves. Then James Stagg (Andrew Scott) arrives, a renowned meteorologist from Scotland who analysed the data in relation to storms coming over the Atlantic, past the Azores and along the Gulf Stream towards Europe.

Needless to say, Krick and Stagg differed in their opinions, but Eisenhower needed certainty. After all, millions of lives were at stake, as well as the future of the war being at stake... 

In the middle of all this was the calming influece of Kay Summersby (Kerry Condon), a former ambulance driver who had been Eisenhower's assistant for three years, who saw people's human side.

A terrific, edge-of-one's-seat thriller which definitely lived up to its name, with wonderful performances by all the lead actors. Definitely one not to miss, and look out for in the awards season...
