To mark International Women's Day, the British Embassy in Luxembourg launched its first Ambassador For A Day essay competition for Luxembourgish students aged 14 to 17.
Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential. Today there are too few women in international diplomacy, including women from under-represented backgrounds, whether ethnic, religious, economic, cultural, or personal identity, among others. Women are not represented at parity in political and business sectors. This is why the British Embassy in Luxembourg is encouraging young people from diverse backgrounds to participate and engage with the topics of gender equality and equal opportunity.
The essay competition encourages young students from 14 to 17 to think about their own leadership potential and to add their voices and perspectives to issues that affect us all. The winner will have a chance to shadow Ambassador Fleur Thomas for a day and join a large embassy event in summer. The winner will also have the chance to develop his/her/their English skills and learn what international diplomacy is all about.
The competition will centre around one of the following essay questions:
- What positive change would you like to see in your community when it comes to dealing with gender inequality?
- How can you contribute to creating a more inclusive environment for all genders?
The word limit for the essay is 500 words and the final deadline is Monday 2 May 2022.
The entries can be sent in via email: EnquiriesLux@fcdo.gov.uk or by post to the British Embassy in Luxembourg.
Once all entries are received, a panel will consider the applications and announce a winner on 25 May 2022.
