Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has confirmed that plans to connect Arlon (Belgium) and Luxembourg via a new cycle path are becoming a reality.

The monitoring committee of the Interreg Grande Région programme has approved the cycle path development project between Arlon and Luxembourg. This project is being carried out by six Belgian and Luxembourg partners with the Public Service of Wallonia Mobility and Infrastructure (SPW MI) as lead partner.

With tens of thousands of Belgian commuters crossing the border at Arlon every day to reach Luxembourg City, this 10-kilometre-long cycle path represents for the partners "very significant cycling potential" which could be exploited upon completion of this project.

Concretely, on the Belgian side, it is planned to develop a 6-kilometre-long "cyclostrade" (cycling link) on the N4 between Arlon and the Luxembourg border. On the Luxembourg side, the various stakeholders will develop an old local line over 4 kilometres in order to ensure continuity of the Belgian cycling link up to the cycle paths connecting Luxembourg City, while also serving the areas of Steinfort and Koerich.

Nearly €10 million will be invested in this Belgian-Luxembourg project, with 40% covered by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In Wallonia, part of the budget will mainly be provided by SOFICO with the participation of the SPW MI and the City of Arlon (Ville d'Arlon). The Luxembourg partners (Ministry of Mobility and Public Works; National Roads Administration; municipalities of Koerich and Steinfort) will provide the remaining funding needed to implement the project.

"This project illustrates our commitment to the use of bicycles and the strengthening of cross-border cooperation. [Cycling] must experience significant growth in the years to come and above all become a real alternative accessible to all in a secure manner for short- or medium-term daily trips," stated Luxembourg's Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes. "Faced with climate challenges, cycling is part of the solution to creating a future where environmentally friendly travel becomes the norm. Together, we are aiming for a cross-border cycling ambition."

The completion of this cycle link is planned for 2026-2027, depending on the different sections, with the completion of all works scheduled for the beginning of 2028 (subject to possible construction site hazards).
