The new National Stadium for Luxembourg has been confirmed to be located between Cessange and Gasperich, alongside the A6 motorway, following agreement at the Ville de Luxembourg's council meeting on Monday 13 July.

The 21.4 hectare site has been re-zoned for the project which will comprise a national stadium for sports including football and rugby, as well as administrative offices, a P&R for 1,981 vehicles, garages and warehouses for the city's sport service. Public transport will also serve the venue, with both bus and tram stops to be included.

The stadium design will have 9,595 covered seats for spectators, as well as a VIP area (and 159 VIP parking spaces), a business club with kitchen facilities, shops and restaurants, press facilities and changing rooms. The construction of the stadium will follow UEFA/FIFA standards (category 4).

The total cost of the project will be €65 million, of which the roads authority will invest €1.49m, the Ville de Luxembourg will contribute €4.9m for the Ban de Gasperich project, both for pre-project works. In addition, the Ministry of Sports will contribute €38.9m for the building of the stadium (67%) and the Ville de Luxembourg €19.2m (33%).

Work on the project is to start mid-January (2017) with construction to be completed by early January 2019. A convention is to be signed between the Luxembourg state and the Ville de Luxembourg.

For the project development, 25 tenders were received, from which 6 were short-listed; this was whittled down to 5 tenders, following which the final decision was made to award the project to Groupement Gerkan Marg + Partner (Germany) with the Luxembourgish architects BENG.

Luxembourg's Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch, Minister for Sport, Romain Schneider, and the Mayor of Luxembourg city, Lydie Polfer, along with Alderman at the Ville de Luxembourg responsible for Sport, Simone Beissel, and the President of the Luxembourg Football Federation, Paul Philipp, were in attendance at the press conference of Friday afternoon at the Hotel de Ville in Luxembourg city centre.
