The World Peace Forum is organised by the Schengen Peace Foundation based in Luxembourg and which also organised the Luxembourg Peace Prize in May this year.
A small, yet international group of scholars, researchers, artists, politicians and citizens from around the world organised an initial conference in Schengen, Luxembourg in 2006. From this small event the World Peace Forum has developed into a global platform for peace activists and initiatives. The 2015 edition of the World Peace Forum took place in Romania, in the city of Baia Mare, with the theme “Finding Common Global Values” from 7-10 May. The same year, the 1st edition of the Youth World Peace Forum took place in Cairo, Egypt from 4-6 May.
This year, the 10th World Peace Forum, along with the 2nd World Youth Peace forum, are being organised in Florianopolis in Brazil, from 21 to 25 September 2016, in the Convention Center Governador Luiz Henrique da Silveira, Canasvieiras.
Registration costs USD 120 per person (for either event) and is now open at www.worldpeaceforum.org. Volunteers have a 50% discount and groups of students can apply for special rates to attend (email: carlospalma@worldpeaceforum.org).
Prior to the official opening of the 2nd Youth World Peace Forum on 21 September at 13:00 by Frank Katshunga, Congo, and Joao Raiza, Brazil, a Peace Flash Mob will take place at midday at the Place 15 de noviembre, involving 200 dancers.
The events involve a plenary session, various international speakers and a series of conferences and workshops, as well as social events (art, music, choral, dance, video, flags, exhibitions and dinners). There are also special themes, as follows:
- Friday 23 September: WE BELIEVE IN CHANGES – The Ecology Day
- Saturday 24 September: WE BELIEVE IN HUMAN RIGHTS – Humanity Day
- Sunday 25 September: WE BELIEVE IN PEACE - Education Day
