On Tuesday 2 February 2016 at 12:30, together with CITIM, the Aide à l’Enfance de l’Inde (AEI) is organising a lunch - conference on “The social situation of the Muslim community in India", being held at the premises of CITIM (55 Avenue de la Liberté, L-1931 Luxembourg).
The Guest Speaker will be Dr Wolfgang-Peter Zingel, a recognised expert in Indian developments and associate member of the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University.
The partition of India in 1947 led to the creation of two sovereign States, Pakistan and India. While the predominantly Muslim populated areas were assigned to Pakistan (today: Pakistan and Bangladesh), one third of the Muslims remained in the Republic of India. In the 2011 population census, 172 million Muslims were counted in India, 14% of the total population. Secularism is one of the corner stones of India’s political system. Still, tensions between the Hindu majority and religious minorities, in particular the Muslim community, have led time and again to acts of violence, also in the recent past.
Dr Wolfgang-Peter Zingel will reflect on the roots of these tensions, which run deep in history, religious practices and politics of modern India.
