Past chairs at the BLC 50th Anniversary Gala Ball;

On Saturday 4 May 2019, the British Ladies Club (BLC) in Luxembourg celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Gala Ball at the Hotel Parc Alvisse in Luxembourg-Dommeldange.

Following the welcome cocktail, the 120 members and guests took their seats accompanied by a Scottish bagpiper.

The current Chair, Jugera Ibrahim, led a one-minute silence in the memory of Grand Duke Jean, whose funeral had been held earlier in the day, and invited the British Ambassador to Luxembourg to address the 120-strong attendance.

Ambassador John Marshall congratulated the BLC on their 50th anniversary. He described the day as both historic and sad, and mentioned some links between the UK and Grand Duke Jean. He mentioned that he had the privilege today of attending the funeral and representing the British government. He mentioned that no less than five members representing the British royal family were in attendance, including Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, as well as representatives of the Irish Guards.

He mentioned that the strong UK presence today represented the strong links between the UK and Grand Duke Jean who joined the Irish Guards before eventually leading them. He also recalled the queen also bestowing upon him the Order of the Garter.

He mentioned that a few years ago he had an audience with Grand Duke Jean which lasted for around 20 minutes, during which time he described his great affection for the UK. Ambassador Marshall also mentioned his life of great kindness.

He concluded by mentioning the BLC’s activities over the years including the annual car boot sale which will be held again inns few weeks’ time.

Jugera Ibrahim continued and explained that the BLC represents the British and other international communities including helping them integrate and settle into Luxembourg. She also made special mention of the various groups and committees involved in the life of the BLC, including the present committee.

Following the speeches, the event included a number of pieces of entertainment, reflecting the diversity of the club and its membership, including:
• An (English) saxophone solo and singing “Summertime”
• Jacqueline Fleming, reading a selection of Welsh poetry
• 9 Irish dancers, choreographed and led by Claire Fitzpatrick

BLC chairs, both past and present, were then invited to cut a special anniversary cake prepared specially for the 50th Anniversary Gala Ball which was then served at the conclusion of the meal. A tombola was held and DJ Kirsty Sutherland ensured the dance floor was busy into the early hours...
