The 78th edition of the Luxembourg Red Cross Bazaar will take place on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December 2024, from 10:00 to 18:00 both days, in the marquee at the Glacis car park in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.

Admission to the annual event is free with proceeds going to support initiatives for young people and children in need, in Luxembourg and around the world.

The Red Cross Bazaar is organised by the local section in Luxembourg City, under the High Patronage of Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, President of the Luxembourg Red Cross. Visitors can expect many stalls offering a wide range of items as well as a Food Village which includes a champagne and cocktail bar.

The highlight for young visitors will be the visit of the "Kleeschen" (Saint Nicholas) on Sunday 1 December at 11:00 and then again at 15:00. The Kleeschen visits the Grand Duchy on 6 December each year, bringing toys and presents for children throughout the country.

Chronicle.lu had the opportunity recently to speak with Sylvia Moreaux of Red Cross Luxembourg to discuss the Bazaar and the work behind organising the event.

Chronicle.lu: Can you please tell us when the first Red Cross Bazaar was held in Luxembourg, and was it always held in Glacis car park?

Sylvia Moreaux: The first Bazaar took place in 1946. The Bazaar has already taken place in several iconic venues in Luxembourg City, including the Casino, the Grand Théâtre and the Halle Victor Hugo. In 2024, it will be held under the temporary marquee at the Glacis.

Chronicle.lu: When does preparation for the Bazaar begin?

Sylvia Moreaux: Preparation on-site begins on the Tuesday before the event. However, throughout the year, efforts are made to hunt for bargains on handicrafts, design items and second-hand clothing.

Chronicle.lu: How many visitors attended the event last year and is attendance growing each year?

Sylvia Moreaux: Around 12,000 visitors attended over the weekend last year, an increase from 10,000 in 2022.

Chronicle.lu: How many volunteers are required for the successful running of the Bazaar?

Sylvia Moreaux: We had 100 volunteers in 2022 and 150 in 2023.

Chronicle.lu: How many stands are expected at the 2024 Bazaar?

Sylvia Moreaux: There will be over 30 stands at this year's Bazaar.

Chronicle.lu: How many food stands and what types of food will be available in the Food Village?

Sylvia Moreaux: There will be three bars, including a Champagne and a Cocktail Bar. A large selection of tantalising lunch options will be offered. From the Sea: food stands will sell smoked salmon and smoked salmon sandwiches, Belgian shrimp croquettes from the North Sea as well as other sea food, such as oysters and lobsters. Meat Lovers: Bouchée à la Reine, Bouneschlupp (traditional green bean soup with or without meat) and local ham platters, pâté Riesling and Feierstengszalot (traditional meat salad). Veggie Delights: soups, such as Indian carrot soup and Bouneschlupp. Kids' Corner: hot dogs with rolls. From the Forest: seasonal game platters with wild boar salami and game pâté are locally produced for the Bazaar. A large selection of seasonal cakes, pies, cookies and local ice cream will also be available to please any sweet tooth.
