On Thursday 19 November, more than 800 Human Resources professionals met at the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains for the 13th edition of the HR One Gala which consisted in quality conferences and the Luxembourg HR Awards; Leadership, best practices and the future role of HR managers were at the agenda of the #1 HR event in Luxembourg.
Bernard Fontana, former HR Director for ArcelorMittal and current CEO of Areva NP was the first speaker of the event. In is presentation entitled “the HR, the CEO and the Leadership journey” he defined leadership as the capacity to change and transform an organisation. Thanks to this leadership, he was able to engage his employees and results followed. He then added: “CEOs need to have been exposed to Human Resources, as they will be able to acknowledge the power of HR in the company they manage”.
His speech was followed by Christophe Caupenne’s, former chief of negotiators for the RAID in France. He was notably in charge of recruitment and had to determine the profile of negotiator. When studying the characteristics of the perfect negotiator he noticed the similarities with HR. Plus, the role of the leader in such situations is to help talents express themselves.
The third speaker was Abdu Gnaba, anthropologist and founder of Sociolab. He started his presentation with an anecdote showing that people usually do not step out of their comfort zone, and then stated that “change is necessary” as people permanently evolve, which causes problems for HR Managers. “Tell your employees that what they do is important” he concluded.
