
From Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 April 2025, four athletes represented Luxembourg at the inaugural European Road Running Championships, held in Brussels and Leuven, Belgium.
The athletes competed in the 10 km, half marathon and marathon events. Anny Wolter was the first Luxembourgish runner to take to the course, competing in the half marathon. In her debut national team selection, she delivered a strong performance, finishing in 1:23:08 on a hilly and heat-affected course. She finished 37th overall. The top two places were claimed by Belgium’s Chloé Herbiet (1:10:43) and Juliette Thomas (1:10:57), while Italy’s Sara Nestola (1:11:26) finished third.
Ruben Querinjean and Sandra Lieners represented Luxembourg in the 10 km race in Leuven during the European Road Running Championships, held in wet and slippery conditions. Ruben completed the race in 29:09, 44 seconds off his personal best, and placed 32nd out of 77 participants. The podium was topped by France’s Yann Schrub (27:37) and Etienne Daguinos (27:46), followed by Belgium’s Isaac Kimeli (27:58).
Sandra Lieners, competing in her first race as part of the national team, set a new personal best of 35:17, finishing the women's 10 km race 77th among 86 runners. Italy’s Nadia Battocletti claimed gold with a time of 31:10, ahead of Germany’s Eva Dieterich (31:25) and Slovenia’s Klara Lukan (31:26).
The final Luxembourgish athlete to compete was Margaux Bruls, who ran the marathon in Brussels, with the race officially started by King Philippe of Belgium. She completed the 42.195 km course in 2:59:19, finishing under the symbolic three-hour mark. Margaux Bruls placed 23rd out of 25 participants in the women’s marathon. The top two spots were claimed by Spain’s Fatima Azzahraa Ouhaddou Nafie (2:27:14) and Majida Maayouf (2:27:41), while Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel secured third place with a time of 2:28:01.
