On Monday 27 April 2026, the official opening of the fourth edition of the National Over-indebtedness Prevention Week (SNPS) was held at the Abbaye de Neumünster (neimënster) in Luxembourg-Grund.
Organised by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Family, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees, in collaboration with Inter-Actions Asbl and the Ligue Médico-Sociale, the week will highlight that over-indebtedness is not limited to financial issues, but profoundly affects human dignity, mental health, family life and social cohesion.
The opening day brought together representatives from Inter-Actions Asbl, the Ligue Médico-Sociale, the Zenter fir exzessiivt Verhalen a Verhalenssucht (Centre for excessive behaviour and behavioural addictions) , the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, as well as expert Guy Schmit, for discussions on current challenges related to over-indebtedness and prevention measures. According to the ministry, these discussions highlighted the importance of a preventive approach that is accessible, proactive and adapted to the diversity of situations encountered.
During the opening day, the ministry launched a new budget calculator, a simple and accessible tool designed to help everyone analyse their financial situation, better understand the structure of their expenditure and anticipate potential budget imbalances. Available in five languages, the tool is fully aligned with the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Fight against Poverty and aims to strengthen citizens’ financial autonomy.
From Monday 27 April to Friday 1 May, a wide range of activities is being offered across Luxembourg for the general public, young people, professionals and social actors. The detailed programme for the week, as well as the budget calculator, are available at www.endettement.lu.
As part of the National Over-indebtedness Prevention Week, the ministry reminded the public that no one is alone when facing financial difficulties. The information and advice services on over-indebtedness provided by Inter-Actions Asbl and the Ligue Médico-Sociale, as well as the social offices, support and advise those concerned throughout the year, with respect, confidentiality and without prejudice.
The ministry added that by focusing on prevention, strengthening financial education and developing practical tools such as the budget calculator, Luxembourg continues to deploy a more coherent, inclusive and effective approach to preventing over-indebtedness.
