The Luxembourg European Association of Performing Arts (LEAPA) held a table quiz and buffet dinner at the Meliá Hotel in Luxembourg-Kirchberg on the evening of Saturday 5 October 2024.
Eight teams of four participated in the quiz while partaking of a buffet meal.
Quizmaster David James engaged the participants with a range of questions that had been set by Geoff Thompson. The questions were divided into ten categories ranging from General Knowledge to Science and Nature, Literature and Food and Drink.
The participants (including representatives of Chronicle.lu) enjoyed the varying challenges of the different categories and there were many questions that provoked thought and discussion among the players. Who could have known that an octopus has nine brains, or that Sudan has the greatest number of pyramids? There were some embarrassed tables, and many laughs, when Luxembourg was forgotten as one of only two countries in the world with an X in the name - Mexico being the other.
Two teams, "The Sandferters" and "The Radicals", were on equal scores going into the last round with The Radicals emerging victorious by just one point. Quizmaster David James and organiser Rose Flammant presented the team with their prizes.
The positively named "Optimists" did not quite live up to their name, and were very enthusiastic and happy winners of the wooden spoon prize.
LEAPA was founded in 2014 with the aim of organising cultural activities in English and encouraging members to enjoy English-language performances while socialising together. Among the many events it has organised in the past are Jazz, Folk and Christmas Concerts, Play Readings and Rehearsed Play Readings as well as Summer BBQs, and adult and youth workshops. Its most popular event is the Murder Mystery Dinners. One event a month is usually planned with the exception of the summer months. Events to look forward to in the coming months include an NT Live evening on Monday 25 November 2024 at the Foyer Européen, with guests invited to stay for a discussion afterwards, and a Christmas Songs Concert on Friday 13 December 2024, followed by a buffet dinner.
The non-profit organisation currently has 56 members of many nationalities. Membership is open to active/retired officials from EU institutions as well as the general public.
