On Wednesday 3 June 2026, the Grand Ducal Police issued a warning about scam text messages falsely claiming to originate from the police and requesting payment of an alleged fine.
According to the police, several recent cases have involved people receiving SMS messages from a Philippine telephone number informing them that they must pay a supposed fine. The sender falsely identifies itself as the "Grand Ducal Police".
The police stressed that such messages do not correspond to official procedures and noted that fine notices are always sent by post.
The police also reminded the public that messages received from Luxembourg telephone numbers are not necessarily genuine. They noted that so-called "caller ID spoofing" allows fraudsters to display false telephone numbers, making it appear that a call or message originates from a Luxembourg mobile number or an official authority.
The police advised anyone who is unsure whether a message is genuine not to act under pressure and to contact the purported sender through official channels. They also encouraged members of the public to raise awareness of this type of scam among elderly relatives and acquaintances.
