On Monday 19 August 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of State, together with the Ministry of the Interior and the High Commission for National Protection, confirmed that an unannounced zonal test of the SMS alert system took place earlier in the day in the municipalities of Käerjeng, Dippach, Pétange, Differdange, Sanem, Vallée de l'Ernz, Nommern, Waldbillig, Larochette, Heffingen, Fischbach, Junglinster and Betzdorf.
These zonal SMS alert tests are not communicated in advance, which allows mobile network operators to be put in a real situation facing an event triggering the imminent and spontaneous alert of the population.
Note: only people whose mobile phones were connected to a mobile phone base station in the above-mentioned areas at the time the alert was issued received the following SMS: “LU-Alert / Alerte test / No action required / Aucun action obligatoire / Keine Handlung erforderlich”.
