Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of State and the High Commission for National Protection (HCPN) have announced that a national warning system test is planned for New Year's Day.
On Monday 1 January 2024, the Luxembourg government will continue to implement its strategy for testing the alert and information system for the population by carrying out its monthly test of the siren network and the GouvAlert mobile application.
Warning the population is considered important not only in the midst of an emergency or crisis but also in advance, with the aim of "strengthening resilience and prevention", for example based on meteorological or hydrological forecasts, ensuring people can prepare themselves. The warning system aims to serve as an alert platform allowing relevant state actors to share warning messages via different channels. Currently, Luxembourg has a mobile application, GouvAlert.lu, launched in 2018, and a national and zonal SMS system to send out warning messages. In the future, a technology based on cellular broadcasting is foreseen as well.
