Under the Justice and Home Affairs Council of 20 July 2015, Luxembourg undertook to resettle 30 Syrian refugees who are in need of international protection; in order to meet these commitments, a Luxembourg delegation visited Beirut, Lebanon, in April 2017 to conduct meetings with refugees selected in advance by the UN refugee agency UNHCR.
A total of 26 people were selected for resettlement in Luxembourg, including 24 Syrian refugees and two stateless persons, comprising 14 adults and 12 children. These persons arrived in Luxembourg on 13 July 2017.
Representatives of the Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Luxembourg Office for Hospitality and Integration (OLAI) and the Ministry of Health were at the airport to welcome these refugees to the Grand Duchy.
Further resettlement of Syrian refugees is planned for the coming months under the agreement of 18 March 2016 between the European Union and Turkey.
Refugee status as provided for in the Geneva Convention and the Law of 18 December 2015 on international protection and temporary protection will be granted to such persons resettled upon their arrival in Luxembourg.
