A new petition wants Luxembourgish to become a greater part of Luxembourg’s everyday life and society.
The petition stated its belief that the only way to integrate a language in to public life was to make it a part there of. Vusal Gafarov, the petition’s author, suggested that this goal be approached in two steps. First that all public notices be in Luxembourgish as well as in other languages such as French and German. This would include opening hours on shop doors and smaller things like price tags.
The second step would be to incorporate the language in to other areas, such as entertainment, were the petitioner suggested Luxembourgish subtitles for foreign movies.
For the petition to be taken up for debate by the Chamber of Deputies it will need to achieve a minimum of 4,500 signatures before Tuesday 22 March 2016. After a mere 36 hours however petition 206 has already received 117 electronic signatures.
