A motorway accident earlier this afternoon involving three heavy-duty trucks has left one person seriously injured and several vehicles badly damaged.

The incident, in which two tow-trucks and a lorry collided with one another, took place shortly before midday, by the Grünewald exit of the A1. The lorry became wedged in by the other vehicles involved, trapping the driver inside. Rescue workers were called in to free the motorist, who was taken to hospital for their injuries.

The driver of the first tow-truck was not harmed, although the driver of  the second sustained minor injuries. There was significant damage to an uninvolved trailer and truck as well as to the lorry concerned, with the latter left in irreparable condition.

Rescue and medical operations from the fire department and the Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente (SAMU), as well as volunteers from Niederanven, were mobilised for the incident, with the motorway remaining blocked off until 13:15.

The exact circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
