Saturday 20 June is World Refugee Day; in more than 100 countries that day, special attention will be given to the millions of people forced to flee.

In Luxembourg UNHCR and OLAI are combining to mark the event.

Around the world, tens of millions of people are fleeing war, violence or persecution. These people, who have left everything behind are seeking protection, have the fundamental right to seek asylum in another country, to see their application fairly considered and to be received worthily. These people include children, parents, grandparents, students, workers, journalists, people like you and me, ordinary people faced with situations that are not of their making. This day is being held so not to forget, and to better understand the experience of refugees under the slogan "It Could be me, it could be you."

Reflecting on the daily life of a refugee

This year, UNHCR and the OLAI are organising an event Friday, 19 June on the steps of Luxembourg Gare where a UNHCR tent there will educate commuters on living conditions of refugees. Between 07:00 and 09:00, flyers and treats will be distributed to commuters. Paolo Artini, Deputy UNHCR regional representative for Western Europe, and Yves Piron, Director of OLAI, will be present to provide more information to the public on the issue of refugees in the world and Luxembourg. Later, between 17:00 and 19:00, the group "Black Djembe", consisting of several refugees, will give a concert outside the station.
