The number of people requesting asylum in Luxembourg during May rose to 90, from 78 in April, with 443 people applying in total over the first five months of the year; this compares to 389 for the corresponding period last year, and 394 for the first five months of 2013.
Albania saw the most applicants for asylum received, with 19 in total; Kosovo had 17 and Bosnia-Herzegovinia had 19. So far this year, 103 people from Kosovo have applied for asylum in Luxembourg, with 44 from Albania and 44 from Montenegro. In May, 74 Syrian refugees were granted status in the Grand Duchy in addition to these figures.
Of the decisions taken in May regarding applications for refugee status, 10 were granted, 40 were refused, 32 were declared incompetent, 8 were determined to be irrecovable. Another 10 were repatriated to other EU countries (2 to Italy, 2 to Belgium and 2 to Spain), with another 3 coming to Luxembourg (from France and Switzerland). Another 43 were returned to their original countries, 10 forcibly and 33 voluntary.
