On Monday 8 June 2015, Luxembourg's Secretary of State for Housing, Marc Hansen, conducted the first handing-over of keys of an old unoccupied housing department which had been turned into social housing.
The Governing Council decided on 12 December 2014 to convert currently unoccupied housing into a social real estate agency (AIS) and at a moderate cost. The state owns 307 service housing in about 60 homes that are currently unoccupied, and that can be made available through AIS to families in precarious situations and poor housing.
So, just six months after the decision of the Governing Council, a first family, a couple with four children, was able to move into their new home in Rodange.
In early 2015, under the initiative of the Ministry of Housing, a working group composed of representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Housing and AIS was responsible for the implementation of this project.
Apart from an analysis of legal and organisational aspects, an inventory of unoccupied former service housing has begun. A first assessment showed that with less investment, the majority of former unoccupied service housing could be quickly made available. The ISA Technical service is conducting the necessary renovations.
In parallel, the first agreements between the state and AIS have been signed.
