On Tuesday 4 November 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture and Luxinnovation GIE, Luxembourg’s national innovation agency, announced the launch of the first Agri-food Mapping, a comprehensive cartography of the Grand Duchy’s food ecosystem.
The ministry and Luxinnovation said that the aim is to provide a better understanding of the agri-food ecosystem by identifying its businesses and stakeholders and visualising its characteristics. They emphasised that the development of resilient and diversified agri-food chains is one of the key priorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, as it constitutes a cornerstone of an agriculture that is economically viable, socially equitable and environmentally responsible.
The mapping is presented as an online, dynamic, interactive dashboard, on which 747 companies and public entities active in the processing and marketing of agri-food products are listed according to their sector (meat, fruit and vegetables, dairy and eggs, beverages, fish, cereals and grains, other products and food supplements). For example, the beverages sector is the most represented (32%) within the agri-food industry, while fruit and vegetables, dairy products and eggs are at the lower end of the scale. The mapping also identifies 280 agricultural facilitators — companies that enhance the productivity, sustainability and resilience of the agri-food sector, notably through innovation: suppliers of products and services, technology providers, research and testing entities, certification bodies, advisers and consultants, investors and financiers, accelerators and institutional enablers.
Together with experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture and its administrations, the data has been analysed and validated to ensure accurate and reliable information on all key players within the agri-food sector.
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, Martine Hansen, stated: “This tool makes it possible to identify the key players, sectors and their economic and strategic importance within Luxembourg’s agri-food industry. It highlights potential opportunities.”
The ministry and Luxinnovation noted that the direct beneficiaries include businesses involved in food processing, wholesale and retail, agri-food distribution and suppliers of agri-food products and services.
In July 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture and Luxinnovation GIE signed a three-year partnership agreement to support the agri-food sector. Luxinnovation’s role is to provide its expertise and facilitate access to knowledge, funding, networks and business opportunities.
The first tangible outcome of the collaboration was the creation of a brochure summarising the various support schemes available to the sector, presented in 2024. A digital version of this brochure is currently being developed.
Regarding the food ecosystem mapping, Mario Grotz, CEO of Luxinnovation, explained: “The main players in the sector are well known in Luxembourg. However, the development of this tool has helped to reveal many actors who were previously less visible but who actively contribute to the ecosystem or offer relevant solutions,” he added: “Beyond this identification, the tool enables these companies to benefit from Luxinnovation’s services and will play a central role in implementing strategic actions co-developed with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture to structure and energise the agri-food ecosystem.”
