From Monday 4 to Thursday 7 May 2026, Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, undertook an official economic mission to Morocco.
Organised by the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office in Casablanca, the Luxembourg Embassy in Morocco, Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and the Ministry of the Economy, the mission aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and create new opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
According to Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy, Minister Delles led a delegation of 40 people, including representatives from 22 Luxembourg companies and five institutions.
In a context of strong economic momentum in Morocco, marked by the acceleration of public and private investment, the mission reflected a shared commitment to strengthening economic relations between the two countries and supporting exchanges between businesses, institutions and innovation ecosystems.
The ministry added that Morocco is positioning itself as a major player in renewable energy in Africa, with significant ambitions in solar, wind and green hydrogen, while also pursuing substantial investments in infrastructure, telecommunications, industry and advanced technologies. In this context, the mission provided a platform to deepen relations between Luxembourgish and Moroccan economic stakeholders, particularly in the renewable energy, engineering, cybersecurity, industrial technology, logistics, space and green finance sectors.
Official meetings
As part of the mission, Minister Delles met with Ryad Mezzour, Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, to discuss prospects for strengthening economic relations between the two countries. Discussions focused on several strategic areas, including renewable energy, logistics and the space sector.
The minister also met with Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Morocco's Minister of Economy and Finance, confirming a shared commitment to strengthening dialogue between the two countries' financial centres and fostering partnerships in green finance, renewable energy and innovative economic sectors.
Meetings with UM6P, GIMAS and Casablanca Finance City
Minister Delles also visited Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), a private institution founded by the OCP Group and known for its research-driven model centred on innovation and synergies between academia, industry and entrepreneurship. The university hosts nearly 8,700 students across four campuses, the majority of whom are women.
This visit included an exchange with students and highlighted the exchange agreement signed in February 2026 with the University of Luxembourg, aimed at strengthening academic mobility and collaboration between the two countries. The delegation also met with a representative from StartGate, UM6P's startup incubator, underscoring shared interest in innovation and technological entrepreneurship.
Moreover, the mission included a meeting with the Moroccan Aerospace Industries Group (GIMAS). Founded in Casablanca in 2006, GIMAS currently brings together around 150 companies, representing nearly 26,000 jobs. The group is seeking to strengthen its position in the space sector and is interested in deepening its relationship with Luxembourg, according to the ministry.
The Luxembourg delegation also visited Casablanca Finance City (CFC), where they met with the teams of the Casablanca Finance City Authority, which already collaborates with Luxembourg for Finance. Spanning 350 hectares, one-third of which is green space, the district is designed as an integrated urban development project expected to eventually create 100,000 jobs and 100,000 housing units across eight multifunctional zones.
Economic forum and networking
The mission included several meetings with Morocco's private sector, notably with Chakib Alj, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), as well as members of the Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in Morocco (CCBLM). These discussions explored opportunities for economic cooperation and investment between the two countries within an environment that fosters links between Europe and Africa.
A Morocco-Luxembourg Economic Forum, organised in partnership with the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and the CGEM, also brought together institutional and economic representatives from both countries for presentations and sector-specific discussions.
A business breakfast was additionally held with twelve Moroccan companies active in high-value-added sectors such as fintech, healthtech, artificial intelligence, smart mobility, energy, climate and space. These firms were selected by the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office in Casablanca to participate in the Nexus trade show in Luxembourg in June 2026.
Alongside the minister's official programme, the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce also offered its members targeted sector visits and personalised business meetings tailored to their specific needs and priorities.
Following the mission, Minister Delles stated: "Morocco confirms its role as a strategic partner and hub to the African continent, while Luxembourg positions itself as a privileged gateway to Europe. In a context of strong economic momentum and ambitious investments, this mission has strengthened ties between our ecosystems and paved the way for collaborations in key sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, innovation and sustainable finance. I hope these collaborations will materialise in the future."
