The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (Corps grand-ducal d'incendie et de secours - CGDIS) has reported that a fire broke out at the Cattenom Nuclear Power Plant, in a room located outside the controlled area of production of Reactor 3.
On Monday 3 June 2024, at around 15:50, the fire broke out at the level of a power cable of a heating resistor, the CGDIS noted.
As the smoke release did not allow immediate access to the room, during the emergency procedures, an internal fire emergency plan outside the controlled area was activated, allowing the competent teams to be pre-mobilised. According to the CGDIS, the Nuclear Safety Authority has been informed.
The site's intervention teams carried out initial checks, supported by the firefighters of the SDIS 57. There was no intervention in progress in the room, and no injuries were reported. After cutting off the power supply, the smoke cleared and the head of external emergency services confirmed that the fire was out at 16:15. After thermal imaging checks confirmed the absence of danger, the firefighters were able to leave the plant, the CGDIS confirmed.
The emergency measures were lifted at 18:55 in conjunction with the Nuclear Safety Authority.
Reactors 4 and 1 have been on scheduled shutdown since 16 February and 4 May 2024, respectively. Reactor 2 is operating and is supplying the national electricity grid.
