The City of Luxembourg has expressed its condolences to and solidarity with the City of Brussels in Belgium following an attack that took place on Monday 16 October 2023.

On Monday evening, a man opened fire in Brussels, killing two Swedish nationals and seriously injuring a third. The attack took place about 5 km from the stadium where Belgium and Sweden were playing to qualify for the Euro 2024 football tournament. Police later shot the suspect and he died from his wounds in hospital. The Islamic State has since claimed responsibility for the attack.

Upon hearing the news, the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer, wrote a letter, on behalf of the City of Luxembourg, to the Mayor of Brussels on Tuesday 17 October 2023.

In this letter, shared with the public and members of the press, Mayor Polfer stated: "Such an act of barbarity is not tolerable and has no place in our democratic and open societies where everyone, whatever their origin and religious orientation, must be able to live in peace and security."

The letter continued: "In these difficult times, when we mourn the victims who leave a great void in the lives of their loved ones, I offer you, on behalf of the City of Luxembourg, my most sincere condolences and my deepest solidarity."
