Luxembourg non-profit organisation natur&ëmwelt has announced that it will be holding its "Wantervullenzielung" (winter bird census) event on the weekend of Friday 24 to Sunday 26 January 2025.
The annual census makes it possible to estimate the populations of the most common species in urban areas and to establish population trends (e.g. increases or decreases) over the years. The action focuses particularly on the bird species most common in gardens and around houses in winter, such as the Blue Tit, the Sparrow or the Blackbird.
Volunteers are invited to observe and count the birds in their gardens or on balconies this weekend during an hour of their choosing. Natur&ëmwelt has requested that notes are taken of the bird species observed as well as their respective numbers. The collected data should then be submitted via online form at www.naturemweltasbl.lu, along with any photos taken of the birds observed.
In 2024, the Great Tit retained its first place as the most observed variety of bird. It was observed during the winter bird count weekend in 89% of Luxembourg gardens, making it the most frequent species. It was closely followed by the Blackbird, observed in 87% of gardens. Other frequently encountered species include the Blue Tit (80%), the Robin (80%) and the House Sparrow (75%).
Class participation in this event is also welcomed. Teachers can obtain participation forms and the corresponding teaching materials from natur&ëmwelt on request. For further information, suggestions for organising courses and ordering other leaflets, teachers are invited to contact the natur&ëmwelt secretariat via email: secretariat@naturemwelt.lu, or by telephone: 290404-337.
