The Belgian capital has been shaken by several blasts which shook Zaventem airport and a metro station.
Whilst a lot of information, particularly the cause of the explosions, is as of yet unknown, the Belgian government has reported that several people have been killed or injured, with the exact number not released.
The Belga news agency reported that the first explosions took place shortly after shots were heard, with one blast close to the American Airlines check-in at the airport's departures area. Belgium is now on the highest security alert and the metro station in question, close to the EU institutions, has been completely sealed off, as has the railway line linking the airport. All flights have been diverted.
News of the explosions has arrived four days after the capture of Salah Abdesalam in Brussels, who was being hunted by security authorities as a main suspect in the Paris terror attacks in November 2015.
