At Friday's meeting of the Luxembourg government cabinet, the plans for the construction of the Jean Monnet Building 2 of the European Commission in Luxembourg-Kirchberg were approved.
Since 1975, the European Commission has occupied the Jean Monnet building in Kirchberg; in 2009, the Fonds de Kirchberg and the European Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to replace the existing building with the Jean Monnet 2 Building, detailing land reqiements in the process.
With the Luxembourg state financing the construction project, it will assume assume project management responsibility. The project is based on the principle of fiscal neutrality for the state, given that the European Commission has ensured the repayment of the investment made by the state.
The Jean Monnet 2 building will be located in the European Quarter in Kirchberg. It will be implemented in two phases, firstly a 7-storey building and secondly a 23-storey tower, together comprising a total gross area of approximately 111,000 m2 above ground and 78,000 m2 underground. It will have a capacity for more than 3,000 EU officials and thus will bring together in one complex of buildings most of the services of the European Commission in Luxembourg.
